Long Distance Ride. We understand that this stage covering a distance of 87 km offers spectacular scenery as the river continues through the Rhine Gorge between the Hunsrück and Taunus mountain ranges, accompanied by road, railway, and cycle track. A series of pretty riverside towns are passed, including St Goar with the famous Loreley rock nearby. The gorge sides are covered by vineyards and forest, with numerous romantic castles standing sentinel above. The gorge ends just before the military city of Koblenz. Most of the route is on good-quality cycle tracks along the riverside.
Despite the nightmare from the previous nite, we rose early and had breakfast at the hotel, and then tried out the local Rudhesiem Coffee. Rüdesheimer Kaffee is an alcoholic coffee drink from Rüdesheim am Rhein in Germany invented in 1957 by the German television chef, Hans Karl Adam. It is a popular drink in coffee houses. Asbach Uralt brandy and sugar cubes are added to a cup. In 1892 Hugo Asbach, merchant and distiller, founded the company Asbach & Co. in Rüdesheim at the romantic Rhine. He did not know at that time that he was setting a milestone in Germany for a name that is still popular as in 1892. A marketing slogan that is still valid today was created in 1937: "The spirit of wine is in Asbach".
Then we hopped onto the ferry to get across to the mainland (Bingen). It started to rain and we looked at the forecast for the day and it did not spell well. For the first time, we decided to take the train from Bingen. The train was almost running parallel to the Rhine river and we could see beautiful scenery along the way. We stopped at Koblenz and it was still raining. We had lunch at Koblenz and continued our train journey to Anderlach which was our next destination. The rain was heavy and when we arrived at Andernach, the rain had eased off and we cycled all the way or Airbnb. So there is not much to pen down except the train ride. Since we took the train, we did not take into account of the distance.
